Lunges is the eighty-fourth chapter of the manga Dumbbell Nan-Kilo Moteru?.

Plot

It's the end of another day at Koyo Girls' Academy, and with another end comes more...suspicion! Ayaka is sneaking away from the school, failing at being furtive, while Hibiki, Akemi and Gina Boyd similarly fail in being furtive while stalking her. Despite growing assumptions of criminal activity, the gang all come together and discover some Yontube celebrity training tips and start learning more about exercise and the world surrounding it.

But why all the sneaking? And where are they going? Is Ayaka actually turning criminal?!?

Exercise Learned

The exercise focused on in this chapter are lunges which are both calisthenics and weighted exercises for home and gym fitness, training the quadriceps, gluteus maximus, calves and other core muscles for strength and endurance.

  • Gaolang Wongsawat appears in a recommended Yontube video in Ayaka's viewing history.
  • Okubo Naoya appears in a recommended Yontube video in Ayaka's viewing history.
  • The "Yontube" fitness celebrity Koala YamaArashi is a parody of Koala Koarashi (コアラ小嵐 Koara Koarashi) who is a Japanese all-purpose entertainer/comedian, having grown in popularity for his fitness videos. The mashed-together name "YamaArashi" is also a pun on a 6-member metal band in Japan as well as the official name for the Judo throwing technique "mountain storm."
    • The exercise of lunges in this chapter are also a direct reference to the appearance of author Sandrovich Yabako and anime director Seiji Kishi (for both Kengan Ashura and Dumbbell Nan-Kilo Moteru? anime series) who participate in a recent fitness video by Koala as can be seen here.
  • Ayaka admits her more exclusive training was due to her regret in easily losing her sparring match against Utsunomiya Koharu during their Kyoto school trip[1]. Her experience is focused on boxing technique and lost quickly due to being attacked on her lower limbs as a weakness. Gina expresses similar interest in training for "getting revenge."
  • Jason Sgatham is known already, and detailed further[2], that posing/miming to hide in the background is a skill learned and practiced[3]. A skill that Machio Naruzo is masterfully expressing in this chapter as well, but not explicitly if due to the inherent "posing" skill associated with bodybuilding (comically) or from the same master as Jason learned the skill from.
